The European Wergeland Centre - Newsletter #50/October 2013

The project on prevention of anti-Semitism and racism in Norway has entered a new phase.
Democratic readiness against racism and anti-Semitism
Teachers and head teachers from five Norwegian schools participating in the project “Democratic readiness against racism and anti-Semitism†(Dembra) met for a whole day workshop this week to design plans for their local school projects.

Based on the findings of the surveys conducted at each school in the first phase of the project, the school teams have identified focus areas for school activities to be organized during the next year. One of the burning issues identified at all schools were wide spread negative attitudes towards Roma people. The schools will also address the use of racist and stereotyping language in school, raising awareness about its – often unintended – insulting and discriminatory effects. The aim is to build sustainable inclusive school cultures in which diversity is regarded as a resource rather than a threat.

Concept Learning for Empowerment through Analysis and Reflection
Student teachers from Germany and Norway took part in a workshop (Trondheim, October 25) discussing concepts such as revolution, collaboration, gender, racism and Zionism. The workshop was the final event and highlight of a cooperation between the students within the framework of CLEAR (ConceptLearning for Empowerment throughAnalysis and Reflection).

Conference on Education for Democracy in Prague
The aim of the
conference was to increase awareness of the crucial
importance of Education for Democratic Citizenship for the development
and maintenance of a sustainable democratic culture as the fundament of
democratic institutions and procedures in the Czech society. JindÅ™ich FryÄ , member of the Steering Committee for
Education of the Council of Europe and the first Deputy Minister of
Education (also member of the EWC Board), held an introductory speech on the relevance of Education
for Democracy in the Czech Republic, highlighting the importance to
link this work to the work of the Council of Europe. The conference was
organized by the Centre for Civic Education under the
auspices of the Czech Ministry of Education and in cooperation with the
European Wergeland Centre on October 11.

SAVE THE DATE: 24-25 April 2014:

The Professional Image and Ethos of Teachers
The conference highlights the importance of education for preparing our youth for a life as democratic citizens, for their future world of work and for the development of their personality. It will focus in particular on the implications this has for the image and ethos of the teaching profession, the competences of teachers and their day-to-day practices. What is the role of the beliefs of teachers, of parents and of the public in general regarding what education - good education - is and which outcomes it ought to produce?
The event is organised by the Pestalozzi Programme of the Council of Europe and the Education and Culture Commission of the Conference of International non-governmental organisations, the EWC is one of the co-organisers.

Democracy and diversity in schools: recognising political realities and re-imagining the nation
In this new EWC statement, Audrey Osler looks into how we can teach for sustainable citizenship, especially now at a time when there are real threats to democracy and when we see attacks not just on minorities but also on policies designed to enable equality and inclusion.

Members of Share&Connect joined in an online discussion with Audrey Osler this week to address the topic further. A big thanks to all who participated in this online exchange!
