Center for Biodiversity Conservation, Shah Abdul Latif
University, Khairpur Sindh-Pakistan in Collaboration with University of
Glasgow, Scotland, UK is organizing a three week TRANSNATIONAL CAREER
DEVELOPMENT POSTGRADUATE COURSE (18th November to 7th December 2013) on “INDUS RIVER NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT”
under INSPIRE Transnational Education Programme Sponsored by British Council
Pakistan & Higher Education Commission Pakistan.
Qualified resource persons from the
University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur and
other parts of Pakistan are providing training which include a range of generic
skills. These include data collection and analysis, parametric and
non-parametric statistics, field survey methodologies, report preparation and
report presentation. Field work will consist of surveys of relevant ecosystems
that are readily accessible from Shah Abdul Latif University. The sites will be
chosen from those at which Heritage Foundation and the Pakistan Wetlands
Project have on-going programmes.  These programmes involve ecological
surveys, wetland management, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services,
rural community uplift, & eco-friendly flood resistant housing. Field work
will also assess permaculture methods used by rural communities to provide
small scale agricultural systems that are sustainable in the long-term. The
field training will be followed by examinations and a certificate distribution
ceremony.
The three-week Career Development Course
focuses on the Indus River and the management of its resources and ecosystem
services, and conservation strategies. It will include consideration of the
range of Indus River ecosystems that rural communities directly or indirectly
depend on for their food, shelter and livelihoods. It will include
environmental impact assessments of the risks and mitigation of natural hazards
such as periodic flooding & earthquakes, biodiversity conservation, and the
design of eco-friendly hazard-resistant buildings.
The Indus River provides Pakistan
with a unique range of natural resources stretching from the mountains of the
Hindu Kush and Himalayas in the north to the flood plains and coastal zone in
the south. These natural resources provide vital ecosystem services that impact
the economy, food, agriculture and the livelihoods and human development of the
country - especially its rural communities.  The proper utilization,
management and protection of these resources and ecosystems are hence a
national priority.
